Winter riding tips

From Don Mann

Do you put your bike away for the winter, or keep it handy in case a winter ride is an option? Calgary’s weather is unpredictable, and I remember going for a bike ride on Boxing Day a few years ago. A cold weather ride is not for everyone, but if you are thinking about one, here are a few things to consider.

Lubrication

Keep your chain clean and use a wet lube rather than the summer dry lube.

Brake pads

Whether you have rim or disc brakes, make sure the pads are up to wet conditions.

Shoe covers

Shoe covers pull over your shoes and keep your feet warm.

Warm gloves

Warm hands make winter cycling a lot more bearable, and you still need the feel to shift and brake safely.

Tires

A knobby tire is a great addition, and a studded tire is better still. Winter tires can be wider and more puncture resistant than your summer ones.

Lights

The days are shorter, so add a front and rear light. There are some great systems made for bicycles.

Fenders

Fenders keep you dry front and back by stopping the wet debris that sprays off your tires.

These are a few ideas to consider. If you have others that keep a winter ride an option, add them to the list.
